Walmart Minority Student Success Initiative

ihep

Recognizing that Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) serve a disproportionate number of first-generation students, from 2009 through 2012, IHEP led the Walmart Minority Student Success Initiative to help MSIs build additional capacity to support first-generation students of color. Through a competitive process, 30 MSIs —Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs), and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) – were awarded a $100,000 capacity-building grant to implement strategic faculty-driven, classroom-based strategies to increase student success. IHEP synthesized best practices from participating institutions to inform the first-generation student success practices at other institutions with significant first-generation student populations.
