A comprehensive portrait of the educationally disadvantaged by spotlighting three important factors that hinder access and success in postsecondary education
Despite the fact that a significant gap in educational attainment for low-income and minority students remains, a range of compounding factors makes the prospects for postsecondary access and success even more daunting. Data and information offer an improved understanding of what these compounding factors are, and how they impact educational opportunity. This report paints a more comprehensive portrait of the educationally disadvantaged than has previously emerged, spotlighting three important factors that hinder access to and success in postsecondary education, including welfare participation, first-generation status, and parental divorce. These factors exacerbate the obstacles that continue to confront low-income, minority, and other disadvantaged students.
