Informed decision-making at all levels of the higher education landscape is contingent upon quality data inputs and analytics. This paper highlights the significance of institution-level data capacity, particularly through the institutional research (IR) function, in supporting effective decision support and meeting state and federal reporting mandates. As postsecondary data collection and analysis are crucial for informed policy-making and improved student outcomes, the paper emphasizes the need to develop institution-level data strategies. By aligning and coordinating data collections at various levels, including students, institutions, states, and federal agencies, institutions can enhance data accuracy, value, and utility for better decision-making. The paper also addresses challenges in converting data into actionable information and advocates for real-time data support to facilitate timely and effective decision-making in higher education.
