NASFAA Golden Quill Awarded to Jamie P. Merisotis

Washington, D.C., Aug. 2, 2002—Jamie P. Merisotis, president and founder of the Institute for Higher Education Policy, has been awarded the Robert P. Huff Golden Quill Award for 2002 by the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) for his “student financial aid research contributions.” The award is presented annually to an individual chosen for their outstanding contributions to the literature on student financial aid.
In accepting the award, Merisotis wrote, “I am very grateful for the acknowledgment from NASFAA and its members. The award says much more about the work of the Institute for Higher Education Policy than my own accomplishments. Thank you on behalf of the entire Institute staff.”
Merisotis founded the Institute for Higher Education Policy in 1993 as a non-profit, non-partisan research group whose mission is to foster access to and quality in postsecondary education. Based in Washington, DC, the Institute has conducted national research projects and published reports on issues such as grants and loans, student credit card debt, minority-serving institutions, Tribal colleges, technology infrastructure, tax policy, tuition costs, community college finances, and international higher education policy. The Institute’s activities, designed to promote innovative solutions to the complex issues facing higher education, include research and policy analysis, policy formulation, program evaluation, and seminars and colloquia.
The Robert P. Huff Golden Quill Award was presented on Tuesday, July 23, 2002 at an awards luncheon during the annual NASFAA conference. Nominees for the award are judged on published work that exemplifies the highest quality of research methodology, analysis, or topical writing on the subject of student financial aid or its administration. The National Chairman selects the Golden Quill recipient with consideration given to nominations submitted by the NASFAA Research Committee and the Editorial Board of the Journal of Student Financial Aid. The award is named in honor of Bob Huff, former director of financial aid at Stanford University, an outstanding contributor to the scholarly literature on student aid. Huff received the first Golden Quill Award in 1984.
