Institute for Higher Education Policy’s Lisa M. Stewart Honored for Contributions as Nonprofit Financial Executive

Washington, D.C., Dec. 14, 2010—Today director of finance and administration at the Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP), Lisa M. Stewart, is being honored with the CFO Rising Star award during the 2010 Nonprofit CFO of the Year Awards Luncheon held at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. This recognition takes place at the annual meeting of the Greater Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants (GWSCPA), whose membership includes more than 2,000 CPAs and other financial professionals in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. The CFO of the Year Awards recognizes nonprofit financial executives in the Washington metropolitan region who “demonstrate operational excellence, outstanding leadership in financial management, and a commitment to enhancing accountability and financial reporting.”
As IHEP's chief financial officer, Stewart directs all financial and accounting systems, grant management functions, human resources, risk management, and office operations. Having spent nearly six years in the nonprofit sector, Stewart understands the nuances of nonprofit finance and works collaboratively with IHEP’s staff to ensure that the organization is financially strong and operationally efficient as it fulfills the programmatic aspects of its mission. Earlier in her career, Stewart held positions at NextiraOne and Mercedes-Benz. She has an MBA and B.S. in business administration from the University of Phoenix.

Now in its fifth year, the 2010 Nonprofit CFO of the Year Awards will also honor winners of the CFO Lifetime Achievement and CFO Innovator of the Year awards. Nominations were reviewed and evaluated by an independent judging panel comprised of: Harvey Berger, CPA, retired tax partner, Grant Thornton, LLP; Brenda S. Hargett, CPA, CAE, chief operating officer, American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery/Foundation; Andrew Lang, CPA, president, Lang CPA Consulting, LLC; Kathy McKinless, CPA, senior advisor, Archbishop of Washington; Richard Newman, Esq., independent financial advisor; and Donald Williamson, CPA, LLM, professor, American University Kogod School of Business and director, Masters of Science Taxation Program.
