IHEP Joins 15 Organizations in urging Congress to Increase Funding for the Postsecondary Student Success Grant Program

Published Apr 26, 2024

Washington, DC (April 26, 2024)The Institute for Higher Education Policy and 15 partner organizations sent a letter to the House and Senate LHHS-Ed subcommittees calling for increased funding for the Postsecondary Student Success Grant (PSSG) program in FY 2025.

College completion rates have stagnated, with more significant disparities for students from low-income backgrounds, students of color, first-generation students, and community college students. An investment of at least $100 million for the PSSG program would enable more postsecondary institutions to develop, implement, and scale evidence-based strategies to improve postsecondary retention and completion rates. These efforts offer tremendous promise for increasing social mobility, tackling poverty, strengthening our workforce and economy, and reducing racial and income inequities.

IHEP’s support for the PSSG program is rooted in our leadership of Degrees When Due, a national completion initiative to reengage students who paused their studies. Through Degrees When Due, nearly 200 institutions from 23 states developed the capacity to reengage former students by sharing data-driven strategies and tactics including degree auditing, adult reengagement, and reverse transfer. The PSSG program can help institutions expand and scale the very strategies honed through Degrees When Due.
