Alliance for Equity in Higher Education Launches New Web site

Washington, D.C., Aug. 19, 2002—A new website for The Alliance for Equity in Higher Education was launched today at http://www.msi-alliance.org. The Alliance, a partnership founded in 1999, was established to promote greater collaboration and cooperation among Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs), which serve high proportions of low-income, educationally disadvantaged students. This partnership advocates the shared policy concerns of its three member groups:
- Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs) represented by AIHEC, the American Indian Higher Education Consortium;
- Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) represented by HACU, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities; and
- Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) represented by NAFEO, the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education.
The Alliance supports strong, positive relations among colleges and universities that serve large numbers of students of color in order to enhance the nation’s economic competitiveness, social stability, and cultural richness.
The new Alliance website provides three vital services:
- informs the public of the important role of minority serving institutions and the common challenges they face;
- provides access to and information about the Alliance’s three member organizations; and
- offers updates on current projects and legislation sponsored or closely pursued by the Alliance.
In addition, users can access Alliance materials, including publications such as Briefing, a periodic newsletter, and the report Educating the Emerging Majority: The Role of Minority-Serving Colleges and Universities in Confronting America’s Teacher Crisis.
Links also are included to important resources within the minority-serving communities. AIHEC represents 32 Tribal colleges in the United Stated and one Canadian institution. HACU is a membership association of more than 200 institutions, located in 14 states, Puerto Rico, and six countries. NAFEO represents 118 Historically Black Colleges and Universities and other predominantly Black institutions.
Funding to support the Alliance has come from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, and other donors. The Institute for Higher Education Policy, a non-profit, non-partisan research and policy organization in Washington, DC, serves as convener of the Alliance and sponsors the website.
