Amber McKowen

Director of Finance

Amber McKowen is the Director of Finance at the Institute for Higher Education (IHEP). In this role, she leads IHEP’s financial operations including reporting, budgeting, and compliance efforts.

Prior to joining IHEP, Amber served as the Director of Finance at The Altamont School for nine years, where she led all aspects of the financial department and oversaw the facilities and auxiliary services teams. She previously served as the school’s Assistant Director of Finance. One particularly meaningful aspect of her work was supporting the Scholarship Committee by helping to determine need-based financial assistance for students. Earlier in her career, Amber held positions in corporate accounting, gaining valuable experience across a range of industries.

Amber is a a proud member of the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and the Alabama Society of CPAs and remains actively involved with both organizations to stay current on evolving accounting standards, regulatory changes, and best practices in compliance.

Amber earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting from The University of Alabama and an MBA from the University of Phoenix.

Amber is motivated by her belief that all students deserve the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential. She attended underserved public schools in Alabama and from that experience learned firsthand how early educational experiences shape access and success in higher education.

Outside of work, Amber enjoys spending time with her family, taking daily walks with her dog, strength training, traveling, exploring museums, taking photos, watching sports, and listening to music.
