Supporting Postsecondary Student Success

Strong support systems – from both inside and outside the classroom – are necessary to help students complete their postsecondary programs.
In an effort to support community-based collaborations geared toward postsecondary student success, the Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP) has developed a new tactical guidebook explaining how some communities within the Community Partnership for Attainment (CPA) network leverage partnerships among key sectors – education, business, policy, and nonprofit and community organizations – to improve student outcomes.
The guidebook takes a deep dive into four distinct student supports provided by community stakeholders:
- Academic (e.g., advising and tutoring)
- Career (e.g., career counseling, mentoring, and work experience)
- Personal (e.g., learning communities and comprehensive first-year experiences)
- Financial (e.g., financial aid counseling and supports for housing, transportation, legal services and other holistic needs)
| To ensure all students succeed in college, communities should prioritize creating a completion culture with a sense of shared responsibility among community stakeholders, including institutional partners. Communities should also target supports to underserved student populations to eliminate equity gaps in student retention and success. Use the guidebook’s interviews, tools, and additional resources to learn more about how to adopt similar practices in your own communities. |
