Expectations of Award Recipients

Each institution selected as a Walmart Minority Student Success Institution commits to the following program requirements:

  • Participating in all activities required of the institution during the three-year project and any project evaluation during and beyond the project period.

  • Identifying, at minimum, a five-person team to work on the Walmart Initiative during the project period. The team must be led by a senior academic administrator and represent a range of institutional stakeholders such as faculty members, student affairs officers, assessment or institutional research staff, other academic staff, and students.

  • Sending the full, five-person, team to the 2009 IHEP Summer Academy to develop an institutional action plan and sending, at minimum, a three-person team to the 2011 Summer Academy to refine the plan and report results. Selected institutions commit to funding registration and travel for two of the five team members in 2009 and two of the three in 2011. IHEP will fund registration and travel for three team members in 2009 and one team member in 2011. Institutions may chose to fund additional team members to attend either Summer Academy or to send a team to the 2010 Summer Academy.

  • Hosting a consultant site visit in the 2010-11 academic years. IHEP will fund consultant travel and honorarium and the institution will cover any on-campus expenses. Additional funds may be available in Year 3 to fund a follow-up visit.

  • Referring to the institution as a Walmart Minority Student Success Institution in all references to the program.

  • Accepting the grant award in three payments. The first payment of $50,000 will be made in Spring 2009, upon selection of participating institutions. The second payment of $30,000 will be made in Spring 2010, after successful completion, submission, and approval of an institutional progress report and interim budget report. A final payment of $20,000—tied to a second progress and budget report—will be made Spring 2011. A final narrative and budget report due at the conclusion of the project.

  • Allow for the use of project materials and results to be included in a publication detailing best practices and lessons learned through the program. This report will be released Fall 2011.
